GELA MIKAVA — GEORGIAN CONTEMPORARY ARTIST
Gela Mikava is a Georgian contemporary artist based in Tbilisi, working across painting and mixed media. His practice explores memory, displacement, post-socialist experience, material culture, and the psychological traces embedded in everyday objects and surfaces.
A recurring material in Mikava’s work is Soviet-era biaz, a domestic cotton fabric connected to his childhood in Zugdidi, Georgia. Working with weathered textiles, layered paint, paper, collage, and fragmented imagery, he transforms materials already marked by time into surfaces where personal memory and collective history intersect.
